Channel Islands Game

Rio Mesa Spartans
2-1 PVL, 6-2 Overall
at
Channel Islands Raiders
2-1 PVL, 6-2 Overall

This was promised to be "a remembered fight." Two good teams, two contrasting styles, playoff berths and a chance to stay in the hunt for a piece of the 2011 Pacific View League title were all on the table for the taking.

The Raiders were led offensively by their Junior RB, Richard Gray. Gray led the County in rushing going into the contest with 1,229 yards through the first eight games of the campaign.

The Raiders were also riding the high of having beaten Oxnard last week, the team that beat us in overtime two weeks ago.

Channel Islands had a tremendous run in the 1980s and the early 1990s. The last 15 years had not been kind to C.I. football and this season Coach Gary Porter's squad was enjoying its finest season in recent memory.

Most expected a high scoring, offensive highlight reel type game.

They would be disappointed.

Tanner Wrout admiring
Jordan Nunnery's running style

Really Tanner?

An old fashioned, rock-em sock-em, low scoring defensive battle is what the fans got to enjoy.

Jordan had another solid night for the Spartans as he rushed for a team high 132 yards thus pushing his season total to 1,072 yards with a 9.09 yards per carry average. It is the second straight year that Jordan has rushed for over 1,000 yards. On defense he also had a key interception that turned the Raiders' offense away near the goal line.

After sitting this play out, literally, Tanner contributed 48 yards on the ground, scored our first TD and was in on eight tackles. His rushing total for the season now stands at 683 yards, an average of 7.34 yards per carry and 8 TDs.

At the half, the Spartans led 7-3.

Spartan QB Trent Thornton

When we desperately needed a big play in the second half, Trent delivered it by throwing a 32 yard TD strike in the third quarter to . . .

. . . Davonte Nunnery, seen here on defense

Davonte's nice catch made it 14-3 Spartans after three periods. Davonte is seen here tackling Raider RB Richard Gray.

We did a nice job defensively holding Gray to only 74 yards on 13 carries and no TDs.

Nate Garay and Nick Holt
bringing down Richard Gray

Nate had a great game against C.I. He is what coaches refer to as a program kid, i.e., a young man who has dedicated himself for four years without getting a ton of playing time. Now, in Nate's Senior season, all of that hard work has paid off and he is contributing greatly. He was in on 11 tackles Friday night.

GREAT KID!

The final score was Rio Mesa 14 - Channel Islands 10.

WHAT A BALL GAME!!!

Up next is our regular season finale against our cross town rivals, the Camarillo Scorpions.

They have already clinched at least a share of the PVL title by running their league record up to 4-0 after beating Oxnard Friday night 63-50. It was the second straight week that the Scorpions finely tuned passing attack has scored 63 points.

A win would give us a co-championship with Camarillo and the PVL's #1 seed going into the playoffs. A loss would drop us into a potential three way tie for second with Channel Islands and Oxnard requiring a coin flip to determine the PVL's #2 seed and the only other guaranteed playoff spot. There will be four Wild Card teams selected for the playoffs.

Better to earn your way in if you ask me.

Here we go again . . .

2011 C.I.F.-Southern Section
Western Division Playoffs

There are only two weeks left in the regular season and the C.I.F.-S.S. Playoffs are set to start on November 18th.

The Pacific View League, as well as the Channel League, will send teams to the C.I.F.-S.S. Western Division Playoffs.

The Western Division is made up of six leagues with a total of 36 schools.

The top two teams in each league get automatic bids into the playoffs. After these 12 teams earn their playoff bids, the C.I.F.-S.S. will then select four Wild Card teams to round out the 16 team bracket. The playoff is a single elimination, four week affair.
